Translating Your JAFF Novel with Cristina Huelsz

As a Jane Austen fanfiction (JAFF) reader, one sees Cristina (Cristy) at web events, on Zoom meetings, and we see her posts on many of our favorite sites. But for those who are new to our sites or are just joining the JAFF community, Cristy is one of our most diverse members, as she offers translation services for English-to-Spanish publications.

Meeting Cristy over Zoom at the 2022 JAFF Reader/Writer Get-Together made me aware that many JAFF readers are unable to read Austenesque novels in their language. Thus, I decided to have my vagary Love by Turns translated into Spanish.

I reached out to Cristy, and we discussed when she might have an opening in her schedule. As she also curates a holiday anthology every year, and as she is well known for her works, this is as important as the next step. Cristy had a contract at the ready, which included the expectations of both the author and her, including an option to have the translation on sale at bookstores for some countries in Latin America that don’t have access to Amazon.

There were many details that I, as the author, had to send to Cristy: a new book cover, the back cover information (blurb), and timely answers, as there are nuances to every language. Further, an alternate book cover is necessary for those authors who only publish through the Amazon platform but choose to list the physical paperback book in the publishing magazines available in some Spanish countries that do not have Kindle services. Cristy has a set of publishers she works with who list these translated titles, making for a broader audience of the paperback version.

Cristy has been an avid reader of JAFF for a long time. She said after reading The Man That Loved Jane Austen by Sally Smith O’Rourke, she decided to study to become a literary translator. Between 2018 and 2022, she took some diplomados (master’s degree classes) for translation and interpretation. She started working with author Nicole Clarkston in 2019, and since then, she has translated/published approximately twenty books in Spanish, including her Christmas anthologies. She’s presently working with her illustrator for the 2024 edition.

She takes care of the translations, makes decisions for all the language aspects, works with a team of proofreaders, takes into account Austen novels’ nuances, and shares the translated JAFF editions on social media.

The paperback for the Spanish version of my vagary Los giros del amor is now available in Kindle Unlimited. I look forward to having the paperback version included in the magazines soon.
