I never really thought Henry loved Fanny. I always felt that he just wanted what he couldn’t have and as soon as she said “yes” to anything, he would be on to his next “hard to get” conquest.

The narrator says, “and so lost the woman whom he had rationally as well as passionately loved. ” and I believe the narrator. So Henry Crawford did love Fanny, it just wasn’t enough to change his ways.

I guess Henry wasn’t who we thought! I think too he loves Danny just not enough to change. I think that picture is cute and she does look like Fanny!lol

Doesn’t she? I saw that painting and that is exactly what I think Fanny would look like. Pale and worried.
I find it so tragic that Henry Crawford finally found a woman he admired but he was too vain to actually get on a better track. Frustrating.

This certainly shows a different sort of tale than the passionless civility we’re told to expect from Austen. MP is not my favourite novel, but it’s full of depths and nuances and shows a rather sordid aspect to the seemingly pristine world of the haut ton. I’ve often thought that if something (one of a number of somethings) had gone differently, Henry could have had a much happier story.

I do wish myself that things had gone differently and that both Henry and Mary Crawford had found redemption. It’s sad to watch someone fall.
