A Perfect Pemberley Christmas

What a thrill to realize that my blog entry this month falls on Christmas Day! And what an honor! To help you celebrate, here is a gift for you: a little story of what the Darcy’s first Christmas at Pemberley might look like. I hope you enjoy the holiday season with everyone who is closest to your heart. Merry Christmas!

The grand halls of Pemberley were decked with garlands of holly and ivy, the scents of evergreen and spiced oranges mingling in the crisp December air. Elizabeth Darcy surveyed the scene with a mixture of satisfaction and apprehension. This was her first Christmas as mistress of the great house, and the expectations weighed on her like an overly heavy plum pudding.

Her husband, Fitzwilliam Darcy, entered the drawing room where Elizabeth was directing the placement of a rather precarious kissing bough. He carried himself with his usual air of composed dignity, though Elizabeth, ever attuned to his moods, detected the faintest hint of amusement in his expression.

“Mrs. Darcy,” he began, his deep voice warm and teasing, “are you certain this bough is intended to encourage affection and not accidental decapitation?”

Elizabeth turned to him with an air of utter seriousness. “If you are so concerned for the safety of your guests, Mr. Darcy, perhaps you would like to take up the ladder and secure it yourself?”

He raised an eyebrow, a half-smile playing at his lips. “I would not dream of depriving you of the satisfaction of your labors.”

“A convenient excuse,” she retorted, laughing. “But I shall forgive you, provided you agree to stand beneath it later.”

Before Darcy could reply, the sound of a loud crash reverberated from the direction of the kitchens. Elizabeth winced, and Darcy’s expression shifted from amusement to mild alarm.

“That would be cook attempting to explain the finer points of pudding steaming to her new assistant,” Elizabeth said, smoothing her skirts. “I fear I may have brought chaos to Pemberley in my efforts to introduce a few new traditions.”

Darcy’s lips twitched. “I find it difficult to imagine anything but perfection under your direction.”

“You are very kind,” Elizabeth replied dryly. “But do not be surprised if the Christmas pudding arrives aflame in a more literal sense than intended.”

Despite the minor catastrophes behind the scenes, the long planned Christmas Eve feast proceeded with remarkable smoothness. The formal dining table sparkled with polished silver and glowing candlelight, and the beloved family gathered around it seemed in high spirits. Jane and Charles Bingley had arrived earlier in the week, their infectious cheer adding to the convivial atmosphere. They had quickly been followed by Mrs. and Mrs. Gardiner , and her aunt’s calm and reassuring manner in particular had done much to soothe Elizabeth’s misgivings about her ability to host such an occasion.

As the meal concluded and the party moved to the drawing room for games and music, Elizabeth felt herself begin to relax. She had planned a variety of entertainments, including a particularly riotous game of bullet pudding, which she was certain would delight the entire party. That thought alone was enough to bring a mischievous smile to her lips.

When the time came for the game, Elizabeth explained the rules with relish. A large pile of flour was placed on a platter, with a single raisin balanced atop it. Each participant, in turn, had to slice away a portion of the flour without causing the raisin to fall. If the raisin tumbled, the unfortunate player had to retrieve it using only their mouth.

Jane, with her characteristic grace, volunteered to go first. She managed a delicate cut that left the raisin teetering but intact, earning a round of applause. Bingley followed, his usual exuberance resulting in a slice so large that everyone held their breath, though the raisin miraculously stayed in place.

When Darcy’s turn arrived, Elizabeth watched with barely concealed glee. Her husband’s natural grace and composure, she suspected, might not extend to such a ridiculous endeavor. Her suspicions were confirmed when his cautious cut sent the entire mound collapsing, taking the raisin with it.

“Well done, Mr. Darcy,” Elizabeth said, her eyes dancing with mirth. “You have set a new standard for failure.”

Darcy cast her a look of mock resignation before bending to retrieve the raisin from the flour. When he straightened, his usually immaculate face was dusted with white, and Elizabeth could not contain her laughter. Even Georgiana dissolved into giggles.

“I believe you have found your true calling,” Elizabeth teased, dabbing at his face with a handkerchief passed over by Mrs. Gardiner.

“Humiliation in the name of Christmas tradition?” he replied, his tone wry but his eyes warm.

The evening continued with charades and carols, and Elizabeth’s heart swelled as she observed the happiness of her guests. When the company finally retired for the night, she lingered by the fire with Darcy, the glow of the embers casting flickering shadows on the walls.

“Do you regret it?” she asked softly, breaking the comfortable silence.

“Regret what?” Darcy’s brow furrowed slightly as he turned to her.

“Allowing such… unconventional festivities,” she said, a hint of worry in her voice. “I know this is not how things have always been done at Pemberley.”

Darcy reached for her hand, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. “Elizabeth, my only regret is that I did not marry you sooner. Pemberley has never felt more alive. Or more like home.”

Her eyes shimmered as she smiled up at him. “Even with flour on your face?”

“Especially with flour on my face,” he replied, pulling her close.

As they stood together, the gentle chime of the clock heralding Christmas Day, Elizabeth felt a profound sense of contentment. In Darcy’s arms, she knew she had found her perfect place. She pulled back slightly, a secretive smile playing on her lips. “I have one more gift for you, Fitzwilliam,” she said softly. “A gift that will change Pemberley even more.”

Darcy’s brow arched in curiosity. “Another gift? I hardly deserve it after my failure at bullet pudding.”

She laughed, her hand resting lightly on his chest. “This one cannot be unwrapped, but I hope it will bring you the greatest joy of all.”

His expression softened as he searched her face. “Elizabeth, what is it?”

Taking his hand, she placed it gently over her abdomen. “A gift to arrive this summer. You are to be a father.”

For a moment, Darcy was silent, his eyes wide with surprise. Then a slow, radiant smile spread across his face. “Elizabeth… truly?”

She nodded, her own eyes glistening with happy tears. “Truly. Happy Christmas, Fitzwilliam.”

He pulled her into a fierce embrace, his voice thick with emotion. “Happy Christmas, my love. You are the best gift I have ever received.”

And when he kissed her beneath the perilously hung bough, she decided it had been a perfect Pemberley Christmas.

The End.
