That is possible, but there were a lot of factors at play. It was a bad idea all around!
With Yates so obsessed with Lovers’ Vows, it was bound to be picked I think.

These are all excellent points! Had they chosen a different play, and kept it only to their family circle, with no costumes and sets, etc, and behaved with propriety in regards to their roles and casting, Sir Thomas would likely not have minded it. But the idea of his daughters acting on stage for anyone but their own brothers would have been scandalous.

Has anyone seen Lovers Vows? I’ve read the script, but it’s hard to know how it translates to the stage. I’d be curious to hear what it’s like.

I’ve not seen it, but I have listened to a good audio play version. It places some interesting emphasis on stuff that I skimmed and made me think about what lines would give someone a fit of the vapors
