If Austen’s characters owned pets, which ones would they choose? Just for fun, I thought I’d pair the characters up with pets that match their personalities. Check out my choices below.
Elizabeth would have a greyhound because she loves her long walks. I imagine if she’d lived in our modern times, she’d be a runner, and she and her greyhound would train for marathons together.

Plus—just look at those fine eyes!
Wickam would have a goldfish because it’s easy and low maintenance.

And it would die.
This site is ending, so I moved this post. Read the rest here. Still to come…Jane, Bingley, and their rats.

Darcy would have a Bouvier. Intimidating at first, but a sweetheart once you get past first impressions.
I think Lady Catherine might also have a trained monkey, because dogs and cats are so ordinary. And also… trained monkey!
I thought of a big dog for Darcy, too–a Bouvier is a good one. And every rich aristocrat needs a trained monkey!
I think Darcy would have an Irish Wolfhound because they look impressive and are reserved and quiet. I enjoyed your take on Austen characters pet choices.
I like that idea! I can see one of those following him through his grounds.
I thought maybe a Cavalier King Charles because they look sort of regal and they have such a cute face like Mr Darcy!lol Maybe a Beagle of he likes to hunt!
Those Cavalier King Charles are really cute. Elizabeth would like sitting with it by the fire.
Dracy would have hunting breeds or herding breeds, I think. These ideas are so cute!
Yes, I kept coming back to a hunting dog, too! But then I wondered if I’d watched too many Austen-themed movies, with the hunting dogs running around with the men. But now that you’re saying it too, I’ll take it to mean that it’s a good pick and doesn’t AT ALL mean that I’ve watched too many of those movies, and I should probably watch some more of them. I’m pretty sure that’s what you meant.
Isn’t there a Great Dane in the Colin Firth version of P&P? Love this post! Really well done.
There probably is! I think the consensus is Mr. Darcy needs a hunting dog.
Thank you!
